損する そんする to lose
得する とくする to make a profit
A friend used the first term, そんする, when she was talking about going to the supermarket to find it closed and having to go back later. So rather than 'lose', perhaps 'lost out' or 'wasted time' would be a better translation?
とくする can be used, for example, when you feel like you've got something for a good price; when you pick up a cheap bargain. Maybe in this case it would be similar to かちがある - value for money?
先週日あるロンドンの日本料理のレストランの人達が飲み会に誘ってくれた。俺もイギリスの友達を誘って、８時くらいにLeicester Squareのパブに着いた…チョウ混んでるなあって思った。もうちょっと入ると右側に日本人がいっぱいいた。みんなに紹介してもらったら、俺の友達と飲み始めた。
お酒を飲みながら日本語でも英語でも色々な人と話してた。女性とけっこう話してたけど、男性にはほとんどしかとされた。まぁ、俺も話しかけなくて同じかな。
11時くらいにパブを出る前に誰かが「カラオケに行こう」と言って、俺はまた日本にいるみたいなあって思った。歌わなくていいと言われたし、俺の友達が行きたかったと言ってたし、まぁいいやって思って、みんなとSohoの方に歩き始めた。
５分後一番前の人が店に入った。俺も入ったら、「えっ、ここ？」と思った。入った店が入ったことがあったけど、昼間に行くと中古漫画の店！店員さんが一人しかいなかった。彼がドアのかぎをしめて、みんなと店の後ろの方に行った。それから彼がドアを開けるとカラオケの部屋４つがあった！なんて怪しい店だと思わない？絶対日本人のグループじゃないと入れないよね。
日本のカラオケ機会がうちらの部屋にあった。その狭い部屋に１５人くらいがいて、場所が全然なかった！
誰かが「どんな飲み物がありますか」って店員さんに聞いたら、「水しかない」と店員さんに言われた！それで皆はEvianの水を飲んでた！まあ、歌う声にいいかもね…
2時間半後やっとそのたばこくさい部屋を出て、お金を払った。そのあと、入ったドアを戻らず、お店の後ろの出口から出されちゃった！ありえない、その店。びっくりした。これってロンドンに日本人の秘密の世界って感じ…あと何があるんだろう？

まめ（豆）, I thought meant 'bean'. Well, it does, but today's I was called a まめ because of my super neat diary, with to-do lists and little check boxes drawn by hand - is this so strange? Here's the definition:
忠実 healthy, hardworking, honest, faithful, devoted
After checking my dictionary I found yet another meaning for まめ... 肉刺... ビックリしました！
Another word used in the same conversation as 忠実 is as follows:
几帳面（きちょうめん）methodical, punctual, steady
今年の日本語能力試験まで時間がなくなってるない！時間は本当に早くたつものだ。スケジュールを見たら今日から４３日間が残ってる。準備はまだまだ…文法だけでも終わらなさそう。どうしよう？計画しないといけないんだ。
これからの計画は…
① まず１級の文法を全部覚えるつもりだ。１１月４日くらいまで出来るといいね。
② どのくらい１級が分かるか来週練習のテストをやってみる。
③ １１月に弱点の長文と漢字を中心として、Language Exchangeで新聞の記事を読む。
④ 時間があれば、電車に乗ってるとき、漢字ドリルの本と文法・語彙の本を読んでみようかな。
⑤ 最後の週に前の試験をやってみるつもりだ。
このスケジュールは絶対無理だよね…

When I came up with these sentences and asked the difference, my language exchange partner was stumped, but insisted there is a significant difference. Perhaps the も example implies that x & y are only two of many places which haven't been visited yet while xとy does not?
I pointed out that we can use も in situations like the following, although perhaps this is more simple than the above?
Though I'm not sure how good this site will be, this is a new podcast site called Learn Japanese. I quote:

I've listened to the first podcast, which is quite professional, though it just covers very basic conversation. One of the Japanese men in the model conversations doesn't sound very natural, though. Also, how natural does this conversation sound?

My startling find of the day is the following kanji:
ございます, 御座います to be, exist (teineigo)
This reminds me of the time I first saw the kanji for います、居ます.
One common mistake Japanese people make when speaking English is with 'almost all'. For example, I often hear things like, 'Almost students study very hard.'
I think it comes from the Japanese word だいたい, which has a slightly different usage - or perhaps because it only requires one word. In English we can use 'most' instead, which might be of more use for Japanese people.
I also get confused with this sometimes when speaking Japanese. Just yesterday I had a conversation about this with my language exchange partner. I asked:
みんなだいたいテニスが好きって正しい日本語？
My language exchange partner said that the だいたい appears to be modifying 好き and not みんな, although people would understand my meaning. So she said that following might be a little clearer:
だいたいみんなテニスが好き。
Or to avoid confusion:
みんなほとんどテニスが好き。
With the first batch of Amazon.co.jp books arriving from Japan, I now have plenty of material to be getting on with. Here we have a couple of 2級 books for one of my friends and a couple of 1級 books for me.
First impressions of the orange reading book from the Master series is that it looks well structured, building you up to the harder and longer passages.
The pink Unicom book for grammar & words for 1・2級 looks less useful considering the overlap with 2級 grammar which I have in another book, but I won't rule it out until I give it a fair go.
The real problem is now time management. With now less than two months until the test day I think my preparations are even further behind than with 2級 last year.
