Maple Hands

Until recently I only knew the word 紅葉 in terms of the colour that leaves turn in autumn.

紅葉（こうよう）　Autumnal colours

There are some other meanings:

紅葉（もみじ）　a (Japanese) maple; red

Note that もみじのような手 means delicate little hands. Why is that?

"もみじのような手" is used to explain baby's hands. I think that baby's hands are red like a maple leaf in autumn.
