Obey the Rules

理性の固まり（りせいのかたまり）

今日私の日本人の友達が↑の表現を使った。「どういう意味ですか」と聞くとみんなは説明うまく出来なくて困ってた。理性は英語では「reason」という意味で「理性的」は「rational」という意味だ。固まるは「to become firm」。

運転をしてきたのでビールとかを飲まない人が自分のことは「理性の固まり」と言った。この表現の意味は多分ルールを守る人。ルールから外れない。Someone who sticks to the rules? そんなかんじでしょうか？友達によるとこれはちょっとネガティーブに聞こえる。

英語ですみません、
～の塊･固まり has a special function when following nouns as seen here: http://dic.yahoo.co.jp/dsearch?enc=UTF-8&p=%E5%9B%BA%E3%81%BE%E3%82%8A&dtype=0&dname=0na&stype=0&pagenum=1&index=03522903344600

so in English you could say:
"(He is) the embodiment of reason" etc.

something that doesn't translate directly but...

英語でもいいですよ。

Actually, that does make sense looking again at the kanji that make up the phrase. I agree, this doesn't translate very easily into English.

下記の言い方もある程度似ているような意味がある。

1.理性一辺倒　＝ A stickler for the rules.
Noun＋一辺倒 means partiality towards.

2. 理に適う（人） = to hold reason, to make sense. A person of reason. (Positive)

3. 理性に束縛される =　 Bound by the rules.
