To be honest a friend did explain this phrase when she used it but I can't remember exactly what she said now. Yes, you are on right lines with 'feeling', though I rarely see 覚える used in this sense.
I believe the meaning was something like 'feeling like being in another world'. Apparently to the Japanese the fourth dimension is not time!
覚える can also mean "to recollect" or "to feel," right? Maybe it's one of those.
四次元にいるような感覚を覚えた。
I felt as though I were in the fourth dimension.
Hmmm...

It could be さめる as in "wake up".
So it could mean wake up from the feeling of being in the 4th dimension.

覚える actually it ends in える so it'll have to be oboeru. I'd say it means to feel.
e.g. 痛みを~ 《感じる》feel a pain.

「感覚を覚えた」と「感じた」は同じ意味やけど、実際起りえないようなことが起こってるように「感じた」時に、「感覚を覚えた」って使うと思うよ。
「四次元にいるわけないけど、そう感じた」って。
