There is no writing section to the JLPT, so naturally it doesn’t really occur to most people to practise writing. For the level one vocab/kanji paper, I’ve come to realise how useful it would actually be to be able to write some of these kanji.
While reading by recognition is fine, it can be almost useless in sections such as the homonym questions. In case you’re like me and keep forgetting what ‘hymonym’ means, it’s when a word is the same as another in sound and spelling but different in meaning.
If you are staring at several words written in hiragana and you can’t picture exactly what they look like in your mind’s eye then you are pretty stuck.
On the other hand, a lot of the words in the paper I have never heard of before whatever way you write them! I guess more study is the only way, but it might help to start writing a diary once in a while again.
